Harris Invictus Academy Croydon are delighted to be working with Dove on developing their international resources for the Self-Esteem Project.
Research shows that low body confidence undermines academic achievement, with 31% of teenagers avoiding engaging in classroom debate for fear of drawing attention to their appearance. Today, more than ever, young people are faced with pressures to be physically perfect and live up to unrealistic ideals. As a result, many create unattainable goals for themselves that can be both damaging and long-lasting. Since 2004, 19.4 million young people have benefited from the Dove Self-Esteem Projects across 115 countries.
The Confident Me Workshop, one of the Dove Self-Esteem Projects created for young people aged 11-14 years, addresses issues of body confidence and low self-esteem. The workshop covers topics such as: appearance, beauty and body image and examines how images of models, actors and celebrities are fabricated or manipulated to portray a “perfection” against which young people often measure themselves against. Most of all, the workshops help young people develop the skills and behaviours that lead to positive self-esteem and body confidence.
This is an exciting SMSC and PSHE project for HIAC to be involved in before it is rolled out at national level. For more information contact: Hannah.Wilson@HarrisFederation.org.uk
