St Pauls & Tate Modern
On Thursday 26th march 2015 the Green Faculty made a visit to the Tate Modern and St Paul’s Cathedral. In the Tate Modern we focused on self-portraits and were looking for any images that had been created in the Cubist movement. We saw pictures by famous artists like Pablo Picasso and discussed the shapes and colours that he had used to try and tell a story.
After lunch we walked across the Millennium Bridge and went to visit St Paul’s Cathedral. We entered via the Crypt that went under the ground and we were able to see memorials to different people, some were on the floor and some had elaborate tombs. Once we went up to the Cathedral floor we were treated to the sounds of the choir practising while looking at the architecture that was around us and above us. We walked around looking at the different plaques on the wall commemorating different times in history like World War One and Two. We had the opportunity to sit and look at the amazing artwork above us in the dome, thinking about how someone had painted it by hand.
It was an enjoyable day and we all learnt a lot about Art and History set in different contexts. Many of the ideas students gained will be used in their Art lessons over the next few weeks as they focus on self-portraits.
